South Australian harness racing trainer Peter Bain continued his impressive season with a training double at Port Pirie on Saturday night, moving into fourth position on the state trainers’ premiership.
One of the victories came courtesy of Mikis Beauty, which has now won five of seven starts since joining Bain’s Gawler stable.
The stable’s other success was provided by three-year-old filly Frolicnearthesea in a heat of the Emerging Stars Series. Having her first start for Bain, the daughter of Downbytheseaside was returning from a break of more than 12 months and had previously been prepared in Victoria by leading trainer Emma Stewart.
Driven by Wayne Hill, Frolicnearthesea was asked to work early, pressing forward three-wide before settling in the breeze outside leader Niteonthetown. Approaching the home turn, the filly quickly asserted her authority and put the race beyond doubt. While she began to tire over the closing stages on the rain-affected surface, she still had plenty in reserve, scoring by three metres and recording a mile rate of 1:57.1.
The victory takes Bain to 19 winners for the season as the campaign approaches its halfway point.
Bain has held a trainer’s licence for around 35 years and traditionally operated a successful small family team before expanding his stable operation last year after taking over from his son Aaron.
Frolicnearthesea will now progress to the $15,000 Emerging Stars Final at Globe Derby next Saturday night
