One of Australian harness racing’s most experienced and highly respected administrators, John Dumesny, has been appointed Chairman of Harness Racing Australia (HRA), ushering in a new era for the national body.

Dumesny, who built an outstanding reputation during his leadership of Harness Racing NSW and the NSW Harness Racing Club, was confirmed as HRA Chairman at the organisation’s Annual General Meeting last Friday.

He replaces Graeme Campbell OAM, who stepped down after serving the maximum six-year term permitted under HRA’s constitution.

With more than four decades of executive leadership and governance experience, Dumesny is regarded as one of the sport’s most accomplished administrators. His résumé includes lengthy tenures as Chief Executive Officer of Harness Racing NSW and, prior to that, CEO of the NSW Harness Racing Club, overseeing both Harold Park and the development of Menangle Park.

His appointment follows a nationwide expression of interest process that attracted a strong field of candidates before an independent selection panel recommended him for the role.

Among the key issues awaiting Dumesny is the future of the Inter Dominion Championship. With Albion Park contracted to host the series through to July next year, Dumesny is keen to see certainty around the event’s future well before the current hosting agreement expires.

The long-term future and funding model of the world’s richest harness race, the $1.5 million TAB Eureka, is another priority. Dumesny has confirmed the race will continue in both 2026 and 2027 and believes it will keep evolving as the sport looks to maximise its flagship events.

Perhaps the greatest long-term challenge facing Australian harness racing, however, is the continuing decline in foal numbers across the country. Reversing that trend and strengthening breeding participation is expected to be a major focus during Dumesny’s tenure as Chairman.

With extensive experience, proven leadership and a deep understanding of the industry, Dumesny takes the reins at a pivotal time as Harness Racing Australia seeks to address some of the sport’s biggest challenges while building a sustainable future.
