The reported decision by Harness Racing New Zealand to discontinue The Race at Cambridge is a disappointing development for the industry.

While it is well documented that Cambridge Raceway has faced financial challenges in recent years, it is difficult to understand why one of the country’s most successful modern race concepts appears to have been sacrificed.

Slot races have become a proven formula for attracting new audiences, with much of the financial commitment traditionally carried by the slot holders themselves rather than solely by the host club. The Race consistently attracted quality fields, generated strong public interest and drew outstanding crowds, making it one of the highlights of the New Zealand harness racing calendar.

For Cambridge, it is another significant blow. The venue previously lost the prestigious Harness Jewels, and now it appears The Race has also been removed from its calendar.

Events like these do more than provide exciting racing—they create buzz, attract mainstream attention and give participants, owners and fans something special to rally around. In an era when racing is competing harder than ever for attention, losing successful marquee events raises questions about the long-term strategy for growing the sport.

Many in the industry will no doubt hope that this is not the end of the concept, but merely a pause before it can return in the future. Cambridge has demonstrated it can stage world-class events, and it would be unfortunate if another of its signature race days disappeared from the harness racing landscape.
