When the South Australian Harness Racing Club committee met late last year to map out prize money initiatives for Globe Derby Park, one priority stood above the rest – finding a way to encourage greater participation in two-year-old racing and breeding.

Rather than allocating all of the available funding to a single feature juvenile race, the committee opted for a broader incentive, introducing a $5,000 bonus for every two-year-old recording its maiden victory at Globe Derby Park.

That initiative has already proven popular, with Cecil Peak becoming the latest youngster to collect the lucrative bonus following an impressive all-the-way victory at Monday’s meeting.

Prepared and driven by Scott Gill, the son of Soho Tribeca was having just his fourth career start. After finishing placed at his previous two appearances at Globe Derby, Cecil Peak broke through in style despite taking on older and more experienced opposition.

South Australian Harness Racing Club president Peter Marshall said the bonus was designed to provide a meaningful incentive for owners and breeders while supporting the state’s juvenile racing program.

“The committee discussed several ideas to promote two-year-old racing and breeding in South Australia,” Marshall said.

“While staging a one-off feature race was certainly considered, we felt the better option was to spread those funds across a first-win bonus that could reward more owners and trainers throughout the season.”

Marshall said the response from participants had been overwhelmingly positive.

“The industry has really embraced the initiative. Receiving a $5,000 bonus on top of the existing Southern Cross incentive provides a significant boost and gives owners another reason to race their young horses at Globe Derby.”

With foal numbers continuing to decline across the industry, the club hopes the incentive will encourage breeders to continue investing in the sport and give prospective owners greater confidence to purchase yearlings.

As the South Australian two-year-old season gathers momentum during the second half of the racing year, the club expects many more juveniles to become eligible for the bonus by recording their first victory at Globe Derby Park.

Given the early success of the initiative, the South Australian Harness Racing Club is hopeful the first-win bonus will remain a feature of its prizemoney structure into 2027 and beyond.
